Single dad (6y/o daughter) homeless in Houston, can't find help. Can anyone give advice?

We've been living in hotels since Thanksgiving and money is running LOW, I just haven't been able to get some steady ground to make anything happen.... keeping us in hotels has been enough of a chore, that and keeping her entertained.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. I haven't found any emergency housing, Housing Authority is 18-24 month wait.

anonymous 		I'm back. It's time for you to make your own steady ground. Life can be in your control again. Go back to school. There are also free GED classes for single parents in most cities. Google it at the public library.

anonymous 		Ten years ago, I was in the same situation and was given some great advice, which I didn't take until five years later. Looking back, I would have saved myself a lot of stress and struggle. Look into courses at your local community college that may help you in the future. There are government grants available to people in your situation that you will qualify for simply by filling out a free FAFSA online. Additionally, many schools have scholarships for individuals who are struggling financially. I had two dependants and not only were my tuition, books and supplies covered, but I received a chceck from the school for the grant money left over. My schooling was free- but I was able to also apply for outside scholarships- some are very simple to qualify for. Although I opted out of it- schools will offer you student loans that don't need to be paid back until after you complete your degree. Some of these loans are government sponsored and do not have a finance charge associated with them- while others have a reduced finance charge. This will help you out of your financial hole and fuel your future (while setting a fantastic example for your daughter). It is hard, but that which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger. Like I said, had I taken this advice - my struggles would have been few. Oh, also, my local Univversity has free day care for the children of enrolled students. Think about it!!!!

anonymous 		try calling 311 or211 and tell them your situation or go to one of the multi-service center thats closest to you in the houston area. sorry there are not alot of services for single fathers, but i know they are working on it!

anonymous 		Eventhough I am not a religious person the best advice I can give you at this time is walk into a church and ask for help (regardless of your own creed) Churches are often quite aware of shelters and emergency housing and they will offer help for free and without having to notify athorties giving you and your little girl a chance to get back on your feet.
